Coming attractions

See Melrose Fire Chief John O’Brien and assorted Boston Bruins team members on ice on Sunday, Nov. 23, in a benefit hockey game at the to raise funds for the North Suburban Family Network. Tickets are $5 per person.

The classic group The Drifters will bring their song stylings to Memorial Hall on Saturday, Nov. 29, at 8 p.m., presented by Brooksby Village and The September Group. Tickets are available from the Melrose Chamber of Commerce or TicketWeb.

Melrose’s own Home for the Holidays celebration, sponsored by the Melrose Chamber of Commerce, kicks off on Friday, Dec. 5, with chowder, holiday songs, and a visit from Santa, and continues on Saturday as holiday trolleys shuttle visitors to and from the different business districts, where local businesses offer holiday treats and specials.

The Melrose Recreation Department will be offering a travel basketball program for boys and girls in the 5th to 8th grade starting this fall. The Recreation Department has partnered with the Melrose Varsity Program to provide a high quality competitive travel basketball program for Melrose residents in these age groups.

The program is currently looking for coaches at all levels. Any individual interested should contact the Recreation Director, Frank Olivieri, for the appropriate coaching and CORI applications.

In addition to the coaching positions, the Boys basketball program is looking for an individual to help with coordination activities related to the program.

Date: Coaching applications will be accepted until September 5, 2008, interviews will be held the week of September 8, 2008.
Date: Information and Fees will be posted on the Parks Department website no later than September 15, 2008.

Victorian Fair

The Melrose Victorian Fair, sponsored by the Melrose Chamber of Commerce, has been a major hometown event for the past 28 years. It is a day-long celebration. When the Fair began in 1981, it was intended to bring community attention to the city’s renovated downtown area. Newly installed Victorian lampposts highlight the prominent architecture and rich heritage of Melrose. From the first year’s launch to its subsequent successes year after year, the Victorian Fair has become a beloved community tradition. It continues to bring local businesses, organizations and Melrose residents together.

MAAV Walk

The Melrose Arts and Cultural Association (MACA) is a local non-profit organization dedicated to supporting and promoting the arts in Melrose. In addition to it’s annual Arts Festival, and the popular monthly Artist Demo. series, they are happy to announce a partnership with The Milano Center to bring art classes to the community this Fall. These class offerings will include exciting and high quality lessons for children and adults in such areas as watercolor,oil, and general creative self-expression with 2D and 3D materials. Classes start the second week in September and instructors include artists Tom Sutherland, Julie Fox, and Kris Rodolico.
